The debut of Phoenix
Our new soccer team Phoenix debuted at the new Roberts Arena this Sunday evening with a 10 PM game against a house team called Smith. The game was hard fought with Phoenix scoring first, but then seeing the lead change back and forth a few times. With only 2 minutes left in the game we were down 6-7. Phoenix fought hard, helped immeasurably by the great play of our leading scorers Matt Blondke and Ryan Broe on the front line. The game was tied 7-7 with only about 1 minute left and Matt received a pass after Smith was turned back by the defense. Matt dribbled the ball around several people, lost it, got it back, and went through the goalie to score the winning goal with 1.6 seconds left on the clock. It was a movie-like ending to a great opening game for the 2nd winter season.

Shown below (left to right) are Phoenix players Ted Hoffman, Ryan Broe, Renee Novak, Lori Brasic, and Mitch Weisbrod.

The players participating in Sunday’s game were: Renee Novak, Lori Brasic, Ted Hoffman, Tom Jacobs, Brad Willis, Mitch Weisbrod, Ryan Broe, Matt Blondke, and Gregory Brasic. Scoring breakdown was Mitch Weisbrod 1 (the first score of the game), Ryan Broe 3, and Matt Blondke 4.
Everyone played very well. Renee and Lori started on Defense and also played Forward at times. Both played very tough soccer, stealing the ball numerous times, breaking up plays, and taking the ball up field with skill. Brad Willis debuted as our new goalie and did very well after a long retirement from soccer, improving consistently through the game.
Ted Hoffman is our least experienced player and probably our best athlete (actually a Triathelete). He ran circles around most of us on the field and did a great job on both offense and defense. Nobody would guess he has only played soccer about twice before.
Tom Jacobs also is returning to soccer after a long retirement from the sport, and also did a fantastic job on the field with impressive ball handling, and field sense. Tom played high school varsity soccer and will be an asset on both offense and defense.
Mitch Weisbrod played his usual great game, giving all he had on the field. Mitch is a play maker and a drive breaker. His unselfish play and solid interdiction skills created headaches for the other team all night. His leadoff goal set the tone for the evening as we took the lead 1-0.
Ryan Broe joined our team last fall after being recruited by my son Logan from the YMCA summer program where Ryan was a counselor. Ryan is a skilled player at every position, a great ball handler, and a serious scoring threat to the other team. He played soccer in high school on the east coast.
Matt Blondke is one of three Blondke men who have played soccer with us since summer 2001. His skills with ball handling and shooting gave us the majority of our goals Sunday. At times he faked the other team so well I was almost laughing on the field. Matt will play until he goes back to college in February. After that his dad Robert, a former coach and premier league player, will take his slot.

Great job Phoenix!
