Just Regular Stuff

With all the headlines recently regarding Afghanistan, Anthrax, and Ramadan I find myself wishing for less big picture stuff and more of the simple.

On the farm these past few weeks things have gone along nicely. Latte had another litter of four kittens about 8 weeks ago and these are promised to a pet store In town on Nov. 20th; hopefully they won’t be too big by then. All the adult cats are fixed now (thank goodness) and we will fix the kittens as soon as they are big enough. The horse barn is a regular cat house these days and surely has not a mouse to be found anywhere.

Lori turned 40 on Oct. 21st and we had a nice party for her. I made her a deluxe 4 layer chocolate cake with different types of chocolate cake in each layer and three types of frostings. It was very good according to the general consensus, I know I enjoyed it and so did Lori. We played in the yard and gave the nieces horse back riding practice.

The horses are doing well and are beginning to get a start on their winter coats. The three colts (Tae-Bo, Nacho, and Shy) are getting quite large and are very friendly. I sometimes mistake Nacho for his mother Cody when they are in the field because he looks so much like her. We have about 200 bales of summer hay left in the barn as we lost the first cutting hay again this year due to bad weather in June. I lined up an additional 350 bales this weekend to get us through the winter.

The weather these last few days has been lovely so we have spent a lot of time outside. Last weekend we put bolts back into our perpetually broken mailbox and repacked the post it is mounted on. There must be an invisible bull’s-eye painted on it as every kid in the county seems bent on bashing it. For awhile I just kept propping it up, joking that it was a “breakaway” mailbox, but decided that our mail carrier shouldn’t have to deal with it standing crookedly and finally fixed it again. Our friend Russ came down last weekend for horseback riding and a steak dinner and we had a great visit. This weekend I worked on my pickup truck fixing the tailgate replacing the retaining straps, a headlight, and replaced the cap on the back. I also put the CD system back into commission and jammed to The Who and Bruce Springstein as I worked. Logan and I graded the driveway with the Massey Ferguson Super 85 and filled some big holes with wheel barrow, shovel and rake.

I installed Windows XP Professional on Lori’s computer twice over the last two weeks but both times the hard drives (different ones) went bad. I think this is being caused by a bad power supply and I will replace that before trying again as the process of installing XP is time consuming. Lori and the kids all liked XP very much so I can already say it is a hit at Brasic Farm even though we are again without a computer for Lori. She will use my machine with Windows 2000 Professional until I get the parts together to fix hers again. I am looking into Satellite Internet Service now to get a better connection to the Web. We don’t have availability of Cable, DSL, ISDN, or Wireless and our dial-up is very bad rarely exceeding 20 Kb/S in connection speed. Since we are paying for two dial-ups at 14.00 per month, and a second phone line at 30.00 per month we are about halfway to the cost of Satellite and it would provide 300 Kb/S downlink speeds.

The whole family watched sports together this weekend. Foremost was the MSU / U of M football game on Saturday and that was a blast. Lori and I are both Spartan alumni and thoroughly enjoyed sending the Wolverine back to Ann Arbor with it’s tail between it’s legs. The game went right down to the last second (literally) and MSU won with a pass from the two yard line into the end zone with no time remaining. I don’t think I can remember so close a game since the contest in 1990 when we beat U of M in Ann Arbor; this years contest was in E. Lansing. We also watched the World Series and that too was a close 7th game with Arizona taking the game and the Series.

Lastly, I am starting to prepare for Deer Season and Thanksgiving. I have a few days off the first week of Deer Season (Nov. 15th) and hopefully will get another nice deer. Truly I enjoy just sitting in the woods but venison is so delicious that I will hunt until I am too old and weak to drag a deer back. With luck that will be at least a few more years into the future. We will do a family Thanksgiving dinner here at the farm again this year (sometimes it is at my moms or Lori’s moms place) and this year it is also my mothers birthday. I will drive up to Grand Rapids and pick her up the Weds. evening before so she can spend the night with us.

Hopefully you have enjoyed reading about the small doings of life around the farm these past few weeks. Life does go on, and things here are the same as they have always been; far away from controversy, protests, and conflict.
