Brasic
(phoenetically Bra-sick, BrA-sick, or Bra-sich) Serbian & Croatian name with our family line originating in two areas of the Balkins. The first area in South-Central Serbia around the village of Oparci. The second area in Croatia around the village of Pribic, near Zagreb. The surname Brasic means "son of Bras" in Serbian & Croatian. Varient spellings are Brasich and Brashich. The American Brasics seem to descend from several immigrants. Among the first were the family of Mato Brasic. Mato Brasic was born about 1897 in Johnstown, PA. When his father died his mother took Mato and the other kids back to Pribic, Croatia. He was raised in the Brasic family house in Pribic built around 1850 possibly by Mato's grandparents. Mato returned to the USA around 1946 and some of Mato's children and grandchildren returned to America later because Mato was an American citizen. Josip Brasic (born about 1874) of Pribic and Mijo Brasic, a cousin from Zagreb immigrated a little later. They came to America (I think seperately) about 1905-1913 in the era before the first world war. There was also a George Brasich who came to the USA and settled in Johnstown, PA. His children were Walter and Josephine. In addition, there was another immigrant Vladimir Brasic who was a cousin of Mato that came to the USA at the age of 14 and settled in Gary, Indiana. He married Julia Makaric and his kids were Vivian, Jack (Vladimir Jacob), Judith Elizabeth, David, and Daniel. Most of the American Brasics I have traced descend from these men from Croatia and the women who married them.
I know of a few other Brasics that can't be fit into these three lines. These Brasics are either related to Janko Brasic, the Serbian Naive Folkart painter from Oparèi, or from a few other lines I have recently contacted that also came from the Pribic area. More information will be posted in the next few weeks regarding these lines. I believe we are all related, however distantly, and it may be that all Brasics originally came from the Oparèi area where Janko Brasics ancestors lived.

The line descended from Mato Brasic
The earliest family line of Brasic in America I have found yet is that of Mato Brasic who's family came to the US from Pribic, Croatia and settled in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania region. I don't know the names of Mato's parents, but I suspect his mother was a Kuharic. Mato's parents or grandparents may have built the Brasic family house in Pribic, Croatia (built about 150 years ago) Mato was possibly my great-grandfather Josip's (born 1895) younger 1st cousin. While born in the US, Mato returned back to Croatia at the age of 4 after his father was killed and lived in the Brasic Family House in Pribic. Mato had 3 kids: Ivan Kuharic Brasic, Mijo Brasic, and Jakov Brasic.
Ivan Kuharic Brasic married a woman named Ljubica Siljevinac and they had six kids. They were Ivan Brasic, Ljubica, Zlata, Stefica, Josip Brasic, and Zvonimir Brasic. Ivan Sr. passed away in Croatia in 1985. All three boys have emigrated to the USA in the 1970's. They live in Chicago, and Wisconson. Josip Brasic married Suzanne and they have two kids: Toni Brasic, and Christine Brasic.
Mijo Brasic married a woman named Vera. Mijo was a builder. Together they had 5 kids: Dragutin Brasic, Branko Brasic, Mato Brasic, Vlado Brasic, and a daughter Vesna Brasic. I know little about his brothers and sister other than they live around Chicago.
Jakov (Jack) Brasic married a woman named Mary, and they came to the USA in 1972. They have no children.

The line descending from Josip Brasic
Josip Brasic and his wife Julia (also a Kuharic) settled near Johnstown, PA sometime after 1912 and raised their family there. Josip (Joseph) and Julia had 6 children that I know of: Nicholas Paul Brasic, and his sisters Mary, Mildred(married name Stanton), Ann(Homoki), Katherine(Juzwiak), and Barbara(Kristianson). I think Marys family stayed in PA, but Mildred passed away in Gary, IN. Barbara Stanton lived in Gary, IN but passed away in Grand Rapids, MI. Katherine Juzwiak passed away in 1991 in Kalamazoo, MI where her sister Ann Homoki lived last we knew. Ann was known to have two children: Bonnie and Ramona Homoki.
Their brother Nicholas Paul Brasic settled in Gary, IN but later moved with his wife Irma Marie Amidei to Chase, MI and lived on a farm. They had 6 children: Nicholas Paul Jr., Myrna Pauline(Perkins), Henry Joel (known as Bud), Karl Harold, Nieta Marie(Irick), and Jon Julian.
Nicholas Paul Jr. has one son I have heard of named Victor Dillon, but Nicholas Paul Brasic, Jr. never married that I know of.
Myrna Pauline Brasic married William Wayne Perkins and thery resettled back to the Gary, IN area raising two boys William Wayne Perkins, Jr. (Billy) and Jeffrey David Perkins. Billy married Sandra Joy Langer and they have 3 children Nichole Lynne Perkins, Julie Diane Perkins, and William Michael Perkins. Billys brother Jeffrey married Jeanne Murphy.
Henry Joel Brasic (Bud) married Joanne Margaret Grinczel. They settled in Grand Rapids, MI and raised 3 kids: Lynne Marie Brasic, Daniel John Brasic, and Michael David Brasic. Lynne married Cesar Martin Salmeron, and they have two kids: Jenna Grae Salmeron and a new baby. Michael David Brasic married a woman named Maria and they have two kids I think. Mike and Dan both live in Arizona now. Lynne is in Grand Rapids, MI.
Karl Harold Brasic married Shirley Devra Shineldecker and they had 2 kids: Gregory Lee Brasic (me), and Melanie DeAnne Brasic. Gregory married Lori Ann Saltman and they have a son and a daughter: Logan Alexander Brasic, and Linden Saltman Brasic. We live in the area of Lansing, MI. Naeda Marie Brasic married John Astell Irick. They have 2 kids: Alyssa Astell Irick, and John Stockton Irick. They live in California.
Jon Julian Brasic has five kids: Larry Brasic, Christine Brasic, Rebecca Brasic, Matthew Brasic, and Joseph Brasic. They live in Grand Rapids, MI.

The Line descending from Mijo Brasic
Mijo Brasic came to the United States (date unknown) and moved to Gary, Indiana. Mijo and his wife Sophia raised their family running a funeral parlor/furniture store. Mijo and Sophie had 6 boys, John, Michael, Frank, Peter, Paul, and Joseph, and one daughter Ann. She and Mijo died quite young and their children were orphaned. The children were scattered. John Brasic grew up and married a woman named Lillian and they had 3 kids: Robert James Brasic, James Robert Brasic, and a daughter Gene Brasic.
Michael Brasic married and has a daughter named Diana Brasic, and Paul Brasic married and has a daughter named Linda Brasic who is herself married and has kids.
Peter went to Main Township High School in Des Plains, Ill. and then, at the age of 18, went to college and earned his B.Sc. Peter then joined the Army Air Corps. and was assigned to a bomber as a belly-gunner/ radioman. On their first assignment, they were shot down. Peter was the sole survivor. He didn't remember going down, but awoke on the ground with his parachute deployed and Germans all around him. From May 14th, 1943 to May 11th, 1945 he was a POW. He helped with hiding pilots under the concentration camp where they were tunneling to freedom. They received packages from home; Peter received vitamins, and donated them to the pilots under the camp. Peter Radavonivich was another prisoner at the camp and orchestrated the escape of the pilots and was to became a friend of Peter Brasics. He refused to escape with Peter Brasic saying that should he (Peter Radavonivich) make his way to Croatia, his name would get him shot as a Croat, and should Peter Brasic make his way to Serbia, he would be shot as a Croat. Upon returning from the war, Peter Brasic got his masters in Physical Therapy and was offered a position as Head of Corrective Therapy in Wisconsin. He moved there and met his wife, married, and remained there. Peter had a son named William Brasic who joined the Navy and lived in Alaska. His two sons are Mathew Brasic, and James Brasic. Mathew and his wife Gerelyn are at the University of Wisconson. James and his wife Erica live in Ohio and have three kids, a daughter Sydney, a son Ben, and a son Nate. (This information is an excerpt provided to me by James Brasic, son of William).

A Letter from Drazen Brasic in Pribic
Drazen is related to Mato Brasics line. Drazen, and his brothers Angelco, and Josip live in Pribic, Croatia. This is a letter from Drazen in reply to one I sent him asking about my great-grandfather. Drazen was really nice and wrote back telling me there was a Josip Brasic born there in 1895 in Pribic, but this is probably not my great-grandfather, as his tombstone in Reed City, Michigan says he was born in 1874 (died 1936).
