Saturday June 29, 2002 Whale watching trip to Botany Bay
Saturday we decided to drive to Botany Bay and see if we could spot any Humpback Whales which winter here. Botany Bay was the site where Captain Cook first landed when the british first came to Australia.

The beautiful south-eastern coast of New South Wales
The coastline rock formations are striking. The rock here is sedementary rock that was uplifted long ago making the distinctive cliff seacoast common to south and south-eastern australia. The coastal plantlife included some types of Yew and Pine as well as Poinsettias which grow here naturally.

The photo below left is a type of Crow which is common here. Like many types of birds here it was not afraid of me very much and allowed me to get within three feet of it and take this photo. The bottom right photo shows Lone and Henrik Werenberg with their daughter Ester (10 yrs) and son Anton (7 yrs) in front of the ocean.

Eight whales were spotted at this location on this day, but I only might have seen one spout far out offshore. The coast was quite interesting nevertheless, and the kids had a good time playing in the rocks.

Sunday June 30, 2002 Fishing trip
Since Logan and I are planning to leave tomorrow (Monday) and fly north to Cairns on a three day diving trip, we decided to take it easy today and do something that didn't require any travel. The Werenbergs live right on St. Georges river and a marina is withing 5 minutes walk, so we rented a small boat and fishing rods for the morning and went fishing with Anton.

We didn't catch any fish in the brackish river so we ended up feeding our prawns to the seagulls when we went to shore to buy lunch and watch a local soccer game. The boys had a good time steering us back upriver to the marina though, and it was a lovely day for a boat ride. Tonight we will go to the school where the Werenberg kids attend to watch the World Cup championship game on big screen TV with the other locals and have a couple bitters. Tomorrow morning we depart for the airport about 5:00 AM for a 6:10 AM flight to Cairns. My Earthlink account will work in Cairns too so I should have updates posted for Monday and Tuesday (Sunday and Monday back home).

A Flight of Blue Ibis over St. Georges River
Later in the day we went on a Bush Walk in the neighborhood preserve. We saw some local wildlife and a nice sunset. The upper right photo shows a big flock of Blue Ibis heading to roost after a day of work on the river banks. The upper left shows sunset over the branch of the St. Georges River that the Werenbergs live on, with Logan looking over the water.
